On September 28th 2016, we had the honor of welcoming special guests from our partner city Philadelphia, USA at our school. Among them were Councilman Al Taubenberger, Ms. Sandberg of Temple University, Ms. Kohler-Reed, and David Kipphut. During a lively discussion round, students of grade 9d, E- and Q-phase were able to ask our guests many questions about their careers, our sister city and US culture in general.
On the 14th October the students of grades 7 and 8 watched the play „The Witches“ which was performed by the English Theatre Frankfurt and was sponsored by Fraport. The story was written by the famous author Roald Dahl. The actors were authentic and it was great fun to watch the play because it was funny and entertaining. We also liked the shadow acting and had the chance to ask them some questions. This way we got more information about their lives as actors.
This year’s homestay brought about 50 American students to our school.
They all came from different states in the USA to our school for five days and were happy to meet their friendly hosts. When they saw the school building they were surprised by the size of it.
On their first day of their time at our school they went on an excursion with their hosts and their classes and had a great time. The next day was a “normal” school day.
At the end of the Homestay they all were sad that they had to go.
On their way home the American students couldn’t stop talking about anything else. They want to come back to visit their new friends from Germany. But until such time these friendships will last with the help of social media.
On 16th July 2015, the Lord Mayor of Philadelphia visited Frankfurt for the official signing of an agreement of partnership between Philadelphia and Frankfurt. Form 7d from our school was invited to the ceremony which took place in the Imperial Hall at the Römer. There was also a reception afterwards where you could have drinks, food and take selfies with the two mayors.
After the reception, the Lord Mayor of Philadelphia came to visit our school, due to his agenda “educational exchange”. He was greeted like a pop star. Then the choir sang and our head of school gave a little speech. After that the mayor went on a guided tour through our school. He saw presentations of several workshops and projects like the Robotic School Club or the Comenius Project. At the end he was met by students and teachers in the Assembly Hall and we could ask him some questions. He promised to promote our school in Philadelphia.
We received a photobook about Philadelphia and chocolates. And we gave him presents including a cap with our school logo and four folders with project ideas for schools who would like to cooperate with us. We hope we can find an exchange school in Philadelphia soon.
